Saif Sporting Club claimed a win after two draws and moved to third in the Bangladesh Premier League points table after handing Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club a 3-2 defeat in the opening match of 22nd round at Rafiq Uddin Bhuiyan Stadium in Mymensingh on Monday.
Brazilian striker Alessandro Celin displayed brilliant skills to put Saif ahead with three minutes into the clock after a quick one-to-one with Colombian forward Deiner Cordoba, who doubled the lead at the half hour mark utilizing a rebound as Saif , and went into the break with a dominating 2-0 lead.
Sheikh Jamal came back stronger after the resumption as their former national striker Shakhawat Hossain Rony netted a brace within quarter-hour mark into the second half to restore the parity. Both the goals came within a three-minute penetration from the either wings.
Rony received a long cross from Faisal Mahmud at the left side of the box before hitting the back of the net with an angular effort in the 56thminute before scoring the equalizer after converting Gambian forward Ebou Kanteh’s cross with a neat finish.
Jamal’s quick equalizers lasted for only 15 minutes as Saif took the lead again through their substitute midfielder Rahim Uddin, who collected a short pass from Cordoba before placing home in between two defenders.
With Monday’s win, Saif, who were held to a draw in last two matches, climbed to third with 41 points from 20 matches, two points ahead of Sheikh Russel, who however played one game less. Sheikh Jamal remained at sixth with 24 points from 21 matches.
